Panhead begins with the story of Paul and his older sister Glenda growing up in the 60s on a farm near Lake Willoughby in Northern Vermont. When they leave for college their lives diverge and change forever, only to converge again when Paul sets out on a motorcycle journey home.

Here's the dramatic sequence for most stories: 1. Things are good. 2. Things get bad, 3. Things get worse, 4. Things get better.

Here's the sequence for Panhead: 1. Things are grim, 2. Things stay grim, 3. There's a glimmer of hope, 4. Ha-ha ... that was just a cruel joke. Things are really worse than ever. Panhead begins by portraying the hardscrabble life in the Northeast Kingdom. We ain't got much, but at least we're decent folk with bedrock values. By the end the decent folks are diseased, broken, alcoholic folk with confused sexual identities. That's why we need the Disney makeover for this book.

Offsetting the bleakness is that the author is an accomplished and skillful wordsmith with a keen eye for detail. Well, sometimes too keen. We get details about motorcycles, farm implements, and new home construction that show us that the author knows what he is talking about. OK, we're convinced, but put this energy into the characters and story.

These are, admittedly, critical comments, but this is a writer who needs and deserves to be taken seriously. In previous works, he has leavened the gritty and pathetic with humor and beauty by keeping the stories short and varied. There's tons of good writing and observation in Panhead, but none of the counterbalance that will make it clear why this a story deserves our attention.

Panhead edition by Bill Schubart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Yesterday afternoon I downloaded Panhead by Bill Schubart. It was a big mistake. I started reading it immediately and had to force myself to stop in time to make dinner!

Bill captured me instantly with the references to nocturnal levitation, something I experienced quite frequently when I was younger, and on occasion in real time when my arse would part company with my Matchless 1942 350cc ex British Army bike with girder front forks, a tank that had to be strapped in place, and ignominiously blued exhaust pipe. This was my first of many bikes, acquired while in the RAF, and traded up when discharged to a more modern, sprung framed Matchless 350, then to a twin cylinder AJS 500 cc with "jampot" rear suspension. A Norton Commander followed, then a brief affair with a BMW, soon to be discarded for four wheels to enable getting laid in a more comfortable environment!

I always lusted for a Vincent Black Shadow, but, alas, by the time I could afford one, they wimped out into producing the motor assisted bicycle Fire Fly. What a sad end to a legend.

Memories still persist of the rhythmic throb of an AJS twin's exhaust, coupled with those of a Norton Commander's, and a BSA one lunger's, along with those of an Ariel Square Four, cruising along at dusk on the way to a Youth Hostel in the Scottish Border country. The exquisite pleasure of pints consumed at a country pub, cigarette smoke wafting under the nostrils, innocent of the threat of "second hand" smoke!

I had enough close calls, none life threatening, to make me a safer, but still speed hungry, rider. The RAF mandated helmet saved my skull on several occasions.

Bill's characterizations are hypnotic. He is a master of the Franglais and Vermont dialects, the translation of which to the written page is seldom successful. The book reads like an autobiography, or at least like one borrowing on life experience, and I'm at a loss for words to describe the pleasure it gave me in reading it. As a one time Advanced Placement teacher of English in Massachusetts, and supposed teacher of Creative Writing (How does one "teach" creativity?), I'm a pretty critical reader and not easily pleased.

I finished the book this morning, just in time to prepare brunch. Like the postprandial cigarette (or post coital!), it would have been an occasion for a smoke, but I quit over 40 years ago.

I hope the book is highly successful and that it gains a wide audience, and that when Bill hits the big time, I can say, I know that guy.

I came across this title while searching in vain for old Harley technical literature available for download. I read a couple reviews of it, and decided it may be time to read an actual book instead of a textbook of more torque specifications, clearance tolerances and the such that have occupied my reading over the years. Glad I did. You should too.
The book was interesting, although could have used some editing.....I found the ending quite sad and sudden.
There is nothing like a good book on a rainy day. However rain or shine Panhead delivers. After reading Fat People and The Lamoille Stories Uncle Benoit's Wake and Other Tales from Vermont Bill Schubart's first two books..(delightful warm and humorous collections of short stories)..my hunch was, if there were to be a novel coming in the future..it would be good one. I wasn't disappointed. I got more than I bargained for. Panhead is an engrossing read. From the opening ride on a motorcycle down a winding route 100 through the narrow valleys and farm country of central Vermont..I was hooked. Mr. Schubart has a way with beautiful descriptive passages as he weaves a tapestry for the reader and draws you deeper and deeper in. His, is a deft, subtle and patient hand.. He takes the time to engage us .. he brings things to a slow simmer and lifts us up and takes us along with him for a rich and rewarding ride..This is a good book well worth your time..no matter what the weather!
